# Data Centers Help Caterpillar Clear $20B

Caterpillar reported the first $20 billion quarter in its history on August 4, with Power & Energy sales rising as data-center applications lifted demand for large engines and turbines. The company's second-quarter sales and revenues rose 24% to $20.543 billion, and adjusted profit per share reached $8.17.

The useful signal is not that an industrial company said the words data center. Caterpillar does not break out data-center revenue as its own segment. The signal is narrower and more testable: the AI buildout is showing up in power-generation equipment, not only chips, cloud leases and server racks.

## What Caterpillar reported

The [earnings exhibit](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/18230/000001823026000040/ex991toformcat2q2026earnin.htm) said total sales and revenues were $20.543 billion, up from $16.569 billion a year earlier.

Chairman and CEO Joe Creed called it the first time Caterpillar had generated more than $20 billion in sales and revenues in one quarter. Operating profit rose 50% to $4.295 billion, while the adjusted operating margin was 21.9%.

## The data-center line sits inside Power & Energy

Power & Energy total sales were $8.238 billion, up 17% from a year earlier. Within that segment, Power Generation sales were $3.098 billion, up 29%.

Caterpillar's release gave the important detail: Power Generation sales increased in large reciprocating engines and in turbines and turbine-related services, primarily in data-center applications.

That makes the story different from a generic AI-capex headline. ## What the numbers do not prove

The release does not say how much revenue, profit or backlog came specifically from data centers. It also does not isolate AI workloads from other data-center demand. Any claim that data centers alone produced the record quarter would go beyond the source.

There is another boundary in the profit number. Caterpillar said second-quarter operating profit included $392 million of expected International Emergency Economic Power Act tariff recoveries. That does not erase the sales-volume signal, but it matters when comparing profit growth with demand growth.

## What to watch next

The next useful evidence is whether data-center applications remain a named driver in later quarters, and whether Caterpillar gives more detail on backlog, order rates or capacity constraints in Power Generation.

For now, the official record is specific enough. Caterpillar crossed $20 billion in quarterly sales and revenues, Power Generation sales rose 29%, and the company tied that rise primarily to data-center applications in large engines, turbines and related services.
