## Article

Lumentum reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on August 11, less than three weeks after AXT disclosed a six-year indium phosphide wafer capacity deal with $87 million of planned deposits. The earnings question is no longer only whether AI data centers want faster optical links. It is whether the upstream wafer supply can keep up.

The deal gives next week's call a second-order test. If optical networking is becoming one of the AI buildout's harder bottlenecks, then [Lumentum](/stock/LITE) has to show more than demand. It has to show capacity, margin discipline and supply-chain resilience around a material that cannot be swapped for ordinary silicon.

## What changed before the call

Lumentum's [Lumentum earnings-date release](https://investor.lumentum.com/financial-news-releases/news-details/2026/Lumentum-Announces-Reporting-Date-for-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-Year-2026-Results/default.aspx) says the company will release fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results after the market closes on Tuesday, August 11, with a webcast at 5 p.m. Eastern.

The harder clue arrived from [AXT](/stock/AXTI). In its [AXT Form 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1051627/000143774926024883/axti20260715_8k.htm), AXT said it entered a capacity reservation agreement with Lumentum Operations on July 26 for indium phosphide wafer substrates. The filing says AXT will reserve a minimum annual commitment for six years and support additional capacity that may be required.

The same filing says Lumentum agreed to pay a $43.5 million initial deposit within 30 business days and a second $43.5 million deposit, with timing and terms to be determined during calendar 2028. AXT's [AXT supplier release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1051627/000143774926024883/ex_993544.htm), filed as an exhibit, says the reservation runs through December 31, 2031.

## Why indium phosphide matters

Indium phosphide is not a buzzword in this story. AXT says its InP substrates are used when a typical silicon substrate cannot meet the performance requirements of semiconductor or optoelectronic devices, with end markets including data center connectivity.

That puts the material directly in the path of AI networking demand. Lumentum's [Lumentum fiscal Q3 release](https://investor.lumentum.com/financial-news-releases/news-details/2026/Lumentum-Announces-Third-Quarter-of-Fiscal-Year-2026-Financial-Results/default.aspx) reported $808.4 million of fiscal third-quarter revenue, up from $425.2 million a year earlier, and the company describes itself as supplying optical and photonic technologies for AI, cloud computing and next-generation communications.

## What would settle the question

The August 11 call can narrow three uncertainties. First, whether Lumentum confirms enough fiscal Q4 demand to justify capacity commitments that stretch into 2031. Second, whether the company describes InP substrate availability as a constraint, a managed input or a source of pricing power. Third, whether gross margin guidance shows optical demand converting into profit rather than only backlog.

Those questions matter beyond one supplier. The recent [Carrier and Corning AI infrastructure split](/news/news-carrier-corning-ai-infrastructure-guidance) showed that investors are already separating data-center demand from supplier execution. The Lumentum call adds a more specific test: the AI optics trade now has a named upstream material and a signed reservation contract.

For now, the verified record is narrow. Lumentum has a dated earnings catalyst on August 11. AXT has filed a six-year InP capacity reservation agreement with two planned $43.5 million deposits. What remains unknown is whether that commitment marks a solved supply plan or evidence that AI data-center optics are becoming a materials bottleneck.
