## Article

OpenAI said Thursday that Free and Go users will get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna starting next week, while Plus and Pro users can use an updated GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT now. The change turns OpenAI's newest model lineup into a broader access test: how much better reasoning can be offered to mass-market users without opening every tool or relaxing abuse limits.

The expansion is not unlimited ChatGPT in every mode. OpenAI said file uploads, images and other tools will still have limits, and Luna's wider access remains subject to abuse guardrails.

## What OpenAI changed

OpenAI's [August 6 product post](https://openai.com/index/improving-gpt-5-6-sol-in-chatgpt/) says Plus and Pro users can access the updated GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT with more reliable factual answers, more focused responses and a new slider for response effort. The same post says GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users this week.

The larger change comes next week: Free and Go users are scheduled to get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna and a new Think button for harder questions. OpenAI's [ChatGPT release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) repeat the same access boundary.

OpenAI's [official X post](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/2085434712429052386) framed the move as making better intelligence easier to access in ChatGPT, with Sol powering both instant and deep reasoning for Plus and Pro users and Luna expanding for Free and Go users.

## The limits are the story

The announcement separates ordinary text chat from the more expensive surfaces around it. Unlimited Luna text chats do not mean unlimited file analysis, image generation, uploads or every ChatGPT tool. OpenAI's [August update PDF](https://cdn.openai.com/pdf/GPT_5_6_August_Updates.pdf) also says users accessing GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna in Codex and ChatGPT Work are still governed by their existing plan limits.

That boundary matters because model access is now a packaging decision as much as a capability decision. If OpenAI can move free users onto Luna for everyday text while keeping costly tools metered, the company can make the product feel materially stronger without giving away every high-cost workflow.

## Why it matters

The access change follows OpenAI's recent [GPT-5.6 price-performance update](https://openai.com/index/advancing-the-price-performance-frontier-with-gpt-5-6/), its [academic-researcher access expansion](/news/news-openai-academic-researcher-access) and its [Astra proof release](/news/news-openai-astra-lean-proofs). Together, the moves point in the same direction: more model capability is being pushed into cheaper or broader tiers, while the highest-cost usage stays fenced by mode, plan or tool.

That creates a sharper competitive question for other AI providers. Users may not compare benchmark tables first. They may compare which product lets them ask harder questions every day without hitting a paywall or a small message cap.

## What comes next

The useful test begins when Free and Go users receive the unlimited Luna text-chat path next week. Watch whether OpenAI keeps the boundary stable, whether the new Think button changes ordinary usage, and whether Plus and Pro users treat the Sol effort slider as a reason to stay on paid plans.

For now, the verified claim is narrower than the marketing implication: OpenAI is expanding Luna text access for free-tier users and upgrading Sol access for paid ChatGPT users. It has not made every ChatGPT tool unlimited, and it has not changed Codex or ChatGPT Work limits through this consumer access update.
